The developpment of the Clinical-Administered Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Scale (CAPS) started in 1990 with the first version of the CAPS, assessing the 17 symptoms of PTSD outlined in the DSM-III-R, as well as eight associated symptoms.Developed at the National Center for PTSD, the CAPS (Blake et al., 1990) was designed to overcome the limitations of other available PTSD interviews. In 1992, an alternate version of the CAPS, called the CAPS-2, was designed for assessing current symptom status, and ratings are made over a one week, rather than a one-month time period. (Blake et al. 1992).The CAPS (or current life time diagnostic version) was later renamed CAPS-DX (Diagnostic version) to avoid the confusion with CAPS-2, renamed CAPS-SX (1-week symptom status version).Since then, other versions have been developed.
